Breathe On Me
Eddie James Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴In Your presence lay
The faithful potter's clay
With every part of Adam's being
He was crying and pleading
Saying Lord, breathe on me
Breathe on me
Fill this place
Oh, breathe on me
With the breath...
And when the day of Pentecost
Was fully come
They were all with one accord
Gathered in the upper room
And in Your presence lay
The faithful potter's clay
With every part of their being
They were crying and pleading
Breathe on me
Breathe on me
Fill this place
With the breath of heaven
Breathe on me
Breathe on me
Fill this place
With the breath of heaven
And as it was at Pentecost
And on the sixth day
We are all in one accord
And we are gathered in one place
And in Your presence lay
You're the potter, we're the clay
And every part of our being
Is crying and pleading
Breathe on me
Breathe on me
Fill this place
With the breath of heaven
Breathe on me
Breathe on me
Fill this place
With the breath of heaven
Rain on me
Rain on me
Fill this place
With the rain of heaven
Rain on me
Rain on me
Fill this place
With the rain of heaven
Burn in me
Burn in me
Fill this place
With the fire of heaven
Burn in me
Burn in me
Fill this place
With the fire of heaven
Send the fire
Send the fire
Send the fire
Send the fire
Burn in me
Burn in me
Fill this place
With the fire of heaven
Burn in me
Burn in me
Fill this place
With the fire of heaven
Burn in me
Burn in me
Fill this place
With the fire
Overall Meaning
The lyrics to Eddie James’s song, Breathe On Me, express a longing for the presence of God to descend upon the faithful very much like it did on the day of Pentecost. The faithful are like clay in the hands of a potter, yearning for His breath to fill them, to change them. The lyrics are a metaphor for the transforming power of God that can change human beings from ordinary vessels to extraordinary instruments of His will. The Pentecostal experience is a reminder that the power of the Holy Spirit is available to every believer, to every generation. When they gathered in the upper room, they were chanting the same prayer, “Breathe on me,” allowing the Holy Spirit to fill them and transform them from within.
The second verse of the song reflects on the Pentecostal experience, when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples and filled them with spiritual power. The song emphasizes the unity of the believers by emphasising they were in “one accord.” In such moments, believers are like clay, a metaphorical way of expressing the idea that the Holy Spirit molds and shapes believers into the image of Christ. The believers' whole being is devoted to seeking the Holy Spirit's presence, crying and pleading for it. The song's chorus reiterates the plea for the Holy Spirit's presence in the form of breath, rain, and fire, a representation of the Holy Spirit's purifying and life-giving nature.
