The World Wrestling Federation yesterday disputed the FBI’s claim that one of its former pro wrestlers was caught up in an auto-insurance scam.
Carmine Azzato, 31, of Brooklyn, was one of 67 people charged with conspiring to defraud insurance companies by staging fake auto accidents in a multimillion-dollar rip-off.
Barry Mawn, who directs the FBI’s New York office, said Azzato was a former WWF wrestler.
An FBI spokesman said the bureau believed he fought under the name Blast, and retired in 1997 as a result of an injury.
But WWF spokesman Judd Everhart said there was no record of Azzato wrestling with the WWF.
