The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a list of animated movies that have been submitted for the consideration for 92nd Oscar Awards.
A whopping 32 movies will be vying for the attention of members of the Academy to gain a spot in the final five movies that will then further fight for the ultimate win. To determine the five nominees, members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch are automatically eligible to vote in the category. Yours truly have not had a chance to watch them all. Some for the lack of access, some for they are yet to release. But the list gives an idea of how Disney once again coming in hot to become the strong contesting studio to take the golden trophy home one more time. Disney has produced Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4 under their Pixar banner. Toy Story 4 became a hit, appealing to the nostalgia of the fans towards the characters of Woody and Buzz Lightyear. The animation was closer to look realistic than the previous versions of the movie. Frozen 2, set to release in India on November 22, is already running high on strong buzzword. After the merger with Fox, Disney also has one more movie in the race -- Spies in Disguise with voiceovers by Will Smith and Tom Holland. Dreamworks Animation isn't far behind. The company has Abominable and How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in the running. Illumination Entertainment has The Secret Life of Pets: 2 as their contender while MGM is pinning its hopes on The Addams Family reboot featuring voiceovers from Charlize Theron, Oscar Isaac, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Finn Wolfhard.
I fail to see how dud of a sequel, Warner Bros' The Lego Movie 2: Second Part, will even make it to the second round for the voting. The movie was too long for its own good and lacked the direction. Sony Pictures Animations' entertaining caper The Angry Birds 2 was fun to watch in the theatres but doesn't have the potential to make it to the final round of voting. Laika Entertainment is back in the race with their stop-motion animated picture Missing Link. The story was new and endearing but it still didn't drive the point home with its message of belonging to your community. But the painstaking hard work behind the technique of stop-motion will definitely serve as a boost for the prospect of the movie.
Nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards will be announced on Monday, January 13, 2020. Hopefully, before the date, yours truly will be able to catch up on the rest of the movies that have submitted their entry in the hopes to be victorious in the end.
The 92nd Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2020, (that is the morning of February 10, 2020, for India) at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live on Star World in India.
