Northeastern University suffered profound loss this week after the sudden passing of esteemed humanities Professor Angel David Nieves. NU President Philomena Mantella shared the devastating news in a campus-wide email Thursday, prompting an immense outpouring of grief from Nieves’ many colleagues, students and friends.

The cause behind Nieves’ premature, shocking death remains unknown at this time, with details still forthcoming surrounding the tragic incident. What is undisputed is the meaningful impact Nieves made through his scholarship, authorship and dedicated mentoring of marginalized student groups during 10 years at Northeastern.

As Head of NU’s pioneering Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Nieves contributed groundbreaking research on Black feminist studies, African diaspora populations and digital humanities. He published several acclaimed books cementing his reputation as a leading scholar.

However, Nieves is perhaps best remembered by students for his tireless advocacy of ethics in higher education and vulnerable communities in need. Friends say he exemplified true compassion and generosity through his actions, refusing to overlook inequality and working to uplift others.

One heartbroken protégé wrote online: “Angel David Nieves truly died of a broken heart – overworking himself and caring too much… This will be a sobering reminder that while we must make our work meaningful through scholarship, we must also care for ourselves and build ethical workplaces of care.”

While nothing could ever fill the absence left behind with his passing, Northeastern has announced plans to establish an Angel David Nieves Memorial Scholarship to support the next generation of undergraduate researchers carrying forward his legacy. Additionally, a commemorative symposium will occur later this academic year celebrating Nieves’ transformative impact on marginalized groups and digital humanities.

Professor Nieves leaves behind countless students and colleagues whose careers he empowered, as well as his bereaved husband Reginald. While the NU community feels his loss profoundly, Nieves’ pioneering contributions shall continue inspiring students and faculty for generations. His sudden death stands as a painful reminder to cherish each precious moment and person.
