Early years

Murphy was born in Harlow, England, on August 10, 1982. His parents gave him a snooker table for Christmas when he was eight years old.

At the age of 10, he got his first century break. He practiced at the Rushden Snooker Centre, where Stephen Hendry, Mark Williams, and Ken Doherty have also played. At age 13, he got a £5,000-a-year sponsorship deal from the Doc Martens shoe company and said he wanted to win the World Championship and be number one in the world. At age 15, he went into business for himself.

Snooker career

In 1998, Murphy started his career on the UK Tour, which became the Challenge Tour in 2000. At the time, the UK Tour was the second-best tour for professionals. In 1997–98, he came in second place at the fourth event on the UK tour. In 2000–01, he won the third and fourth events on the Challenge Tour and topped the Order of Merit rankings.

In 2000, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association gave him the World Snooker Newcomer of the Year award and one of six Young Player of Distinction of the Year awards. He won the English Open Championship in the year 2000.

At the Benson & Hedges Championship in 2000, Murphy won his first professional tournament. He beat Mark Davis 6–1 in the semi-final and Stuart Bingham 9–7 in the final, coming back from being down 2–5 to win. Even though he wasn’t on the first-level main tour yet, this win got him into the Masters, which is a prestigious invitation-only tournament for the top 16, the winner of the qualifying tournament, and a small number of wildcards. In his first televised match at the 2001 tournament, he beat world number 15 Marco Fu and was up 4-1 against seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry before losing. In the 2001 Benson & Hedges Championship, he broke 100 for the first time.

Murphy lost to Stephen Hendry 4–10 in the first round of the 2002 World Championship, which was held at the Crucible Theatre. This was the first time he got to the final stages of a ranked event. In the 2002–03 season, he made it to the finals of both the Scottish Open and the World Championship. In the first round of the Scottish Open, he lost 3–5 to Drew Henry, and in the first round of the World Championship, he lost 9–10 to Ken Doherty on the last black.

Murphy was ranked number 64[24] for the 2003–2004 season, and he made it to the final stages of three ranking tournaments. In the second round of the LG Cup, he beat Steve Davis 5–4 and then lost to John Higgins 2–5 in the third round.  Murphy said, “This is one of the best days of my snooker career” after beating Davis. In the first round of the British Open, he beat Dave Harold 5–1. In the second round, he lost to Paul Hunter 2–5.

In the second round of the Players Championship, which is what the Scottish Open is now called, he lost 3–5 to Jimmy White, who went on to win. He didn’t make it to the World Championship because he lost to Stuart Pettman 7–10 in a qualifying match. Pettman was docked a frame because he was late.

During the 2004–05 season, Murphy was ranked number 48 and made it to the final stages of four ranking events. In the first round of the Grand Prix, which is what the LG Cup is now called, he lost 2–5 to Stephen Maguire. The next step was his first ranking semi-final, which was at the British Open. John Higgins beat him 0–6 and won the match. In the first round of the Malta Cup, he lost to Matthew Stevens 2–5.

He won two qualifying matches to get to the main stage of the 2005 World Championship. He then beat former world champions Higgins 13–8, Steve Davis 13–4, and Peter Ebdon 17–12 to get to the final, where he played world number six Stevens. At the end of the first day (the final of the World Championship is played over two days), he was behind 6–10, but he came back to tie the score at 16–16. Then, he made two breaks that won him the title. In that year’s tournament, he had the most century breaks, with 11.

The fact that Murphy won was a big surprise. Before the tournament, his odds were 150-to-1, and before he won, people thought he didn’t do enough. After Alex Higgins in 1972 and Terry Griffiths in 1979, he was only the third qualifier to win the World Championship or make it to the final. Murphy was the second-youngest player to win the World Championship. The youngest player to win the title was Stephen Hendry, who was 21 when he won it for the first time. No other world champion had to play as many matches as him (seven), and he was the player with the lowest ranking (48th) to win the tournament. Since Joe Johnson in 1986, no player had won the World Championship as his first win in a ranking event. Murphy did so well in the tournament that people started calling him “The Magician.” He also won twice as much money as he had before, which he used to buy a house and a Mercedes-Benz. After he won, he got married to Clare in July 2005.
