South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho is back with the sequel to Train to Busan -- Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula. The official trailer was released last night and it looks like a tribute to Mad Max: Fury Road.

Released in 2016, Train to Busan is one of the best zombie movies ever made. A certified international hit, the movie made $98 million at the global box office. The latest, detailed glimpse into the world of survivors after the apocalypse is just as fast-paced and unpredictable. The sea of Undead raises hell with one wave after the other and the survivors now have to sail and return to a safe harbour. The resemblance with Mad Max: Fury Road lies in the similarity of the background score.

Peninsula has moved into the expanse of the wasteland that was created after the outbreak moved beyond the confined setting of the train. Now the post-apocalyptic society is broken into different factions. The Revenants -- they are Gang Dong-won's former soldier Jung-Seok and his crew who are on a mission to retrieve something. The Survivors -- not everyone died or became undead. Those who are still human, have made themselves a shelter and developed skills that are necessary to outlast one day at a time. They possess the same quality as the characters from The Walking Dead. Then there are the Corrupted -- A new social order has risen in the wake of the zombie outbreak that shattered all the norms of regular society. They capture and force the survivors to fight the zombies for their entertainment. It is not a one-on-one fight. In the trailer, you can see the twisted minds have made a makeshift monster by attaching various zombies.

Focusing on humanity's reaction in the face of an apocalypse is a well-trodden path. What makes it fast-paced and thrilling at first glance is the swarm of the undead that devours everyone in their path -- again something we have seen in World War Z being utilised with great effect.

Official Synopsis -

Four years after South Korea’s total decimation in TRAIN TO BUSAN, the zombie thriller that captivated audiences worldwide, acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho brings us PENINSULA, the next nail-biting chapter in his post-apocalyptic world. Jung-Seok, a soldier who previously escaped the diseased wasteland, relives the horror when assigned to a covert operation with two simple objectives: retrieve and survive. When his team unexpectedly stumbles upon survivors, their lives will depend on whether the best—or worst—of human nature prevails in the direst of circumstances.

Actress Lee Jung-hyun plays one of the survivors and Lee Re is the cheeky young actress with all the questions amid this chaos. Other cast members are Kwon Hae-hyo, Kim Min-jae, and Koo Kyo-hwan among others.

Just like its predecessor, Peninsula is also official Cannes Film Festival selection. With the pandemic still holding us all hostages, the film festival had to be cancelled. The uncertain situation with regards to the opening of cinema halls has also affected Peninsula. The first trailer had promised a Summer 2020 release. Now the new trailer only says 'coming soon.'

With a bigger budget, big stars in tow, a brilliant performance record come massive fan expectations. We will know the answer to the question if the movie fulfils these expectations when it comes out. It is also subjected to the development of current coronavirus pandemic that has upset the releasing schedule of big movie studios across the world. While South Korea is one of the better off countries with a flat curve in the COVID-19 outbreak, the rest of the world has a lot of catching up to do.
